I started teaching a long time ago, and for the first time in my life, I found myself. I found something that I was good at and I enjoyed. For the first time in my life, I felt really good about myself. And one of the things that I was determined that would happen is that the children in my care would get the very best possible education opportunities that I could give them.
I was promoted very quickly and I became the deputy head of a large primary school by the time I was 28. I was appointed to be the catalyst for change, and I was told when I went for the interview that they wanted a woman; they wanted a man.
Even at the interview, they told me that we don't want you; if there is a man that is your equal, they will get the job.
